Handle a large clip within the tool limits

Camera and phone videos can grow quickly, especially when recorded at a high resolution or bit rate. A large video compressor can make an eligible clip easier to upload or share by re-encoding it to a lighter MP4. This tool accepts supported inputs up to 100 MB and three minutes. It is designed for short large files within those limits, not multi-gigabyte recordings or long films.

If a video is over 1 GB, this page cannot process it as-is. Trim the source, export a shorter clip in your editor, or use software that can handle a file of that size before coming here. For a supported clip, the compressor provides three practical levels so you can decide whether size or appearance matters more. The final result is shown beside the original size.

How to use the compressor

  1. Confirm the source is eligible

Check that your MP4, MOV, or WebM is under 100 MB and no longer than three minutes. Large files beyond this limit are rejected rather than silently truncated. Keep a copy of the source so you can retry with another export if needed.

  2. Choose the useful tradeoff

Start with Balanced when compressing a large video for general sharing. Choose Smaller file size if a destination has a strict cap, or Better quality if the clip contains important visual details.

  3. Compare before sharing

After processing, review the two sizes and download the MP4. Watch it at the size your audience will use. A file that meets an upload limit is only useful if the picture remains clear enough for the intended message.

Why large videos vary so much

Two videos with the same duration can have very different sizes. High-resolution frames, action, camera noise, and inefficient original encoding can all increase the data needed. The compressor may also scale output down to at most 1080p. This can substantially help with a high-resolution source, but it means a 4K input will not remain a 4K output. Audio and the original encoding also influence the result.

There is no universal best way to compress large video files. For one clip, Balanced may remove enough data with little visible change. Another may need Smaller file size to fit a service limit. If repeated compression looks poor, return to the original and shorten the clip instead. The general Video Compressor page explains the same working tool without focusing specifically on large source files.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compress a video over 1 GB here?

No. The current maximum upload is 100 MB, and videos may be up to three minutes long.

Why is my short video still large?

Resolution, bit rate, motion, and source encoding all affect size. A short 4K or high-bit-rate recording can be larger than a longer low-resolution clip.

Does the tool accept MOV files?

Yes. MP4, MOV, and WebM are supported inputs when they meet the file and duration limits. The result is an MP4.

Will a large video become small enough for every platform?

No exact size is guaranteed. Check the platform's limit and compare it with the result before uploading.

Should I compress or trim a large recording?

Trim unnecessary footage first when possible. Shortening a clip can reduce size without forcing the remaining frames through more aggressive compression.
