Prepare a MOV recording for easier sharing

MOV files often come from a phone, camera, or editing app. The MOV extension describes a container, and recordings inside it can vary widely in resolution and size. If a short MOV file is awkward to upload or attach, this compressor can make a sharing copy. Choose a file under 100 MB and three minutes, select a compression level, and download the resulting MP4. The original MOV stays the source you keep for editing.

The output format is MP4 rather than MOV. That can be convenient for many upload forms and recipients, but you should confirm the destination's requirements before sending. Compression also changes the video data, so compare the download with the source. If you are preserving a camera original or handing footage to an editor, retain your original MOV separately.

How to use the compressor

  1. Upload a supported MOV

Select the MOV file from your device. The upload must be under 100 MB and no longer than three minutes. If it exceeds those limits, shorten or prepare it in another editor first.

  2. Choose the right balance

Use Balanced as a starting point. Smaller file size favors easier transfer; Better quality favors visible detail. Preview after processing, especially when the clip contains text or rapid movement.

  3. Download and check the MP4

Open the downloaded result and confirm that its picture, sound, and length meet your needs. The tool creates an MP4 with output resolution up to 1080p.

MOV input and MP4 output

A MOV file is not automatically too large, and renaming it to MP4 does not compress its video. Real size reduction requires re-encoding. This tool takes an eligible MOV input and generates an MP4 sharing copy. The result's size depends on the source recording, including its duration, frame rate, resolution, movement, and existing encoding. A very short or already efficient source may have less room to shrink than a high-bitrate camera clip.

If the destination needs a specific maximum attachment size, check the output rather than assuming that a preset reaches the target. You can also shorten the source first, since removing unneeded footage usually cuts size without making the remaining frames softer. For guidance on attachment targets, see the 25 MB and 50 MB pages. For MP4 inputs, the MP4 Compressor page covers a similar workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compress a MOV file here?

Yes. Upload a supported MOV file under 100 MB and three minutes.

Will I download a MOV file?

No. The compressor downloads an MP4. Keep your original MOV if you need that format.

Does changing .mov to .mp4 reduce file size?

No. Changing a filename extension does not re-encode the video or reduce its data.

Will the compressed video retain its audio?

The tool creates a video with audio when the source has a usable audio track. Check the downloaded result before sharing it.

Why is my MOV still larger than my attachment limit?

Source content and duration affect the result. A preset cannot guarantee an exact output size; shorten the clip or use a stronger setting if appropriate.
